Whos Watching You Now – The Age of Video
When camcorders first came out, they were very expensive yet people bought them and started filming just about anything and everything. Now that they are digital and inexpensive not to mention a part of some cell phones, it is as though someone is always watching.
In the 21st Century we are rarely away from some kind of digital or video camera recording us. Oh, of course in the privacy of our homes we seem removed unless you have a teenager. We are becoming very used to being filmed and it is surprising really. There are cameras in stores, in dressing rooms, on dashboards of police cruisers and ambulances. There are nanny cams where people can check to see if the babysitter is really taking care of a child, and cameras in offices to make sure you are working and what youre working on. For the most part, unless theres some kind of legal issue we dont even think about cameras. Of all the things that are shot by a camera each day an inordinate amount of them end up on youtube.com or a similar site. These videos dont just consist of funny things that happen or family events, they include wars, riots, and things that come close to snuff films. It is beyond just a mere trend at this juncture, its everyday reality. None of the court cases where illegal filming has been involved have amounted to much so it seems destined to just be a part of life. There have been times – many of them – when a video could prove a persons innocence in a crime or show police brutality so there are just things that come out of video filming. The real question will be how upcoming technology will change even this.
