A small web-based video series started in 2006 and it appeared to be a youtube.com piece put together and added to by a teenage girl named Bree. People were sort of fascinated because while Bree seemed like a regular kid, she was also full of teenage problems. It was sort of like watching an oncoming train wreck, and she posted several times a week.

lonelygirl15 became something of a star on youtube and gained a lot of followers. The followers would analyze her posts, discuss the smallest details of her videos and it was then that some began to wonder if she was for real. There were all sorts of possibilities suggested from it being a television show teaser to something from alternate reality game. When the cover was blown, it turned out to be a few young guys one of whom was a screenwriter and filmmaker. Rather than shut down, they simply moved forward and created a popular web-based series that lasted for two years.

As a viral video, lonelygirl15 has to be the longest running. She was so popular that the creators did spin offs of her, and similar series have appeared in foreign countries under other names but direct copies nonetheless. The series won numerous awards, the female who played Bree went on to do more public work, and the creators are keeping busy with all kinds of new efforts. They were able to pull off a hoax long enough that even the uncovering of the hoax played into making the series popular.

When lonelygirl15 ended, it signaled a beginning of the new wave of web series. lonelygirl15 will continue to live for a long time. Look at the number of views she gets on youtube! video shoot
