One of the instant phenomena of the internet is the viral video. These are videos that achieve a huge popularity as a result of being shared online. They can be homemade or they can come direct from television shows, but one thing is certain, the best one are very funny.

Viral videos were around before youtube.com existed. In fact, the early viral videos were nothing more than someone making a tape or a dvd and passing it around to friends. Theyd think it was funny or interesting and make more copies and pass them along to other friends. It wouldnt take long for one simple copy to turn into thousands.
The internet made things much much easier and this type of sharing soared in popularity. The name viral was picked up from ad agency lingo where the term viral marketing has been used for years. All viral marketing means is word of mouth. From viral videos many new celebrities have emerged. Whether it is a band who gets their music out and to the public via videos or some kid who is taped pulling an hysterical stunt of some kind, its like everyone is getting their five minutes of fame and sometimes a lot longer than that! One of most interesting viral videos was a series from a young man who had become a criminal and was on the run. He kept posting so many videos as he eluded the police that over several weeks, he become something of a folk hero.

Viral videos are here to stay at least for a while. Theyve achieved importance in political campaigns, in the war in Iraq and on other important fronts. They arent all for fun. video art
