Buying A Computer For Video Editing
After buying a camcorder and playing around with easy editing on free software, youve decided this is something you really want to pursue but you dont know if your current computer can handle the job. There are a few things to consider before racing out to buy a new PC or Mac.
If you can currently edit on your computer with Movie Maker or one of the other freebie editing systems, and it works, then wait until youve decided to move up to more expensive software. Some older computers just wont have enough memory and upgrading may be enough for the moment. Most all new PCs have the right inputs and enough storage so you dont have to go crazy if you do buy a new one. For truly fast editing, youll want to have a firewire input which allows you to connect your camcorder to the computer. This can also be done with an external hard drive containing a firewire input, and an output to get the footage onto a storage device. You can always use a regular USB 2.0 port but the transfer is so slow youll hate it.
For serious filmmakers who want top notch editing software, youll have to choose a computer based on which software youre using. Macs come with iMovie which is a fantastic system, but if a Mac wont work for your other computer uses, it might be an expensive mistake. As it has been forever, the difference in Macs and PCs is huge and so is the price. This is one situation where you really want to do your research, and take your time by talking to people in computer stores. If you dont have an Apple store near you, find someone locally who is knowledgable.
